ASSOCIATE AQUATICS DIRECTOR

POSITION SUMMARY:

Develops, organizes and implements high quality, member-focused YMCA aquatic programs.  Ensures a safe, fun, and enjoyable aquatic experience for members and program participants. This position is being trained to fulfill a future Aquatics Director role within the Association.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Twenty-five percent of time spent in direct service including lifeguarding, swim instruction, community certification classes.
  2. Recruits, hires, trains, schedules and supervises personnel and volunteers as assigned by the supervisor.
  3. Assists in evaluating staff performance and intervenes immediately when a safety issue is present providing corrective solution. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  4. Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete.
  5. Assists the supervisor in developing and implementing effective in-service trainings.
  6. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
  7. Adheres to all YMCA of South Hampton Roads policies, procedures, rules, regulations and best practices.
  8. Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.
  9. Conducts and ensures proper maintenance of pools. Secures and schedules pool facilities. Maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance. Conducts lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid and CPR trainings.
  10. Assists in developing program schedules, coaching program staff to develop high quality programs and implementing new and innovative programs.
  11. Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  12. Meets financial goals as outlined by the supervisor.
  13. Attends meetings as assigned.
  14. Complete Blood borne pathogens course annually, and other trainings as required
  15. Assists in YMCA fundraising activities and special events.
  16. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Responds to
    all member and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner. Manage day-to-day front line member concerns.
  17. Performs weekly Director on Duty shifts.
  18. Ability to perform all functions as those they supervise and meets qualifications and certifications of Lifeguard III and Swim Instructor.
  19. Assists in all areas as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s Degree in Health & Wellness or related field preferred. College courses related to anatomy and physiology or related experience will be considered.
  • A high school diploma is required.
  • Must have knowledge of weight room equipment, cardiovascular equipment, and general strength training principles.
  • Nationally recognized (ACE, AFAA or ACSM) fitness certification are accepted.
  • CPR/ AED and First Aid are required.
  • Strong human relation skills to facilitate positive relationships with participants, members and staff.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Ability to pass a lifeguard water test.
  2. Must be able to remain alert.
  3. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
  4. Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  5. Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  6. Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  7. Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and
    loud situations.
  8. Ability to work inside and outside (environments include humidity, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions)
  9. Must be able to lift and pull 50 pounds
