The Deck Manger is a lifeguarding position that provides pool deck supervision at all times the outdoor swimming pool is utilized for open swim. The Deck Manager’s purpose is to support lifeguards by responding to member/user questions and facilitate general activities on the pool deck including engaging parents in the supervision of their children.
Provides supervision of the pool deck area, entrances, and high risk / traffic areas
Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
Monitor the flow of children/ users between venues (spray park, wader pools, restrooms)
Assist in remind parents to supervise their children
Answer member questions and provide assistance
Assist lifeguards in handling any situations that may occur on the pool deck
Trained in the emergency action plan and the role they play
Attends all staff meetings and training as required
Adheres to all YMCA of South Hampton Roads policies, procedures, rules, regulations and best practices
Assist in all areas as assigned and completes all projects and assignments as assigned by supervisor
Has to be a certified lifeguard. Although a certified lifeguard they will not have any assigned lifeguarding responsibilities while serving in role as Deck Manager
Current Lifeguarding AHSI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (or equivalent course from American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or National Safety Council). Any BLS certification is only good for one year.
Have experience working with the public and dealing with conflict. Prior customer service experience preferred.
Minimum age of 19 years
Due to the supervisory nature of this position the deck manager should be mature, responsible, and possess strong decision making and customer service skills
Must be able to remain alert
Must be able to stand for extended periods
Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals
Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and
Ability to outside (environments include humidity, heat, direct sun, and inclement weather conditions)
Must be able to lift and pull 50 pounds
Must be physically able to obtain required certifications
