YMCA Camp Carter is hiring Lifeguards, for our pool and canoe beach, who enjoy a fast-paced camp environment. Lifeguards ensure the safety of campers, swimmers and participants  by supervising the aquatic areas during programs, administer life-saving skills if required, actively participate in obtaining water safety certifications.


YMCA Camp Carter is a 360 acre outdoor adventure camp and conference center that facilitates programs for various groups of youth throughout the summer.  We are the ultimate camp experience, providing high quality programs including canoeing, archery, challenge course, horseback riding, rifles and so much more!  So are you ready to take the challenge and join us as we make a difference this summer!


Education & Certifications

  • Certifications: YMCA Lifeguard, ASHI Basic Life Support (ASHI CPR Pro), Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen.

  • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.

  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.



  • Must be at least 16 years of age

  • Candidate will act as a lifeguard during recreational, instructional and exercise usage of the pool; must be alert at all times, keeping in mind that the safety of program participants is your primary responsibility.

  • Must keep a neat and clean appearance;

  • Must work at peak efficiently in all aspects of the aquatic program assigned

  • Must arrive and leave work at the assigned times; should be ready to go to work at least 5 minutes prior to scheduled guarding time

  • Must be properly dressed according to set standards

  • Must enforce pool regulations for swimmers promptly and courteously

  • Must test pool for chemistry and temperature, to log chemical levels, temperatures, water clarity, bather load and any actions taken hourly on the proper recording forms

  • Must provide vigilant, un-distracted supervision of the pool

  • Must read and be familiar with staff aquatic manual

  • Must understand and be able to carry out first aid and emergency procedures

  • Must report fully all accidents and incidents on the correct forms

  • Must check safety equipment when coming on duty and report any problems to the Head lifeguard or Program Operation Director

  • Must lock and unlock gates to control entrance or exit of swimmers

  • Must be able to perform all skills constituting a part of the training program for life guarding certifications

  • Must clean up equipment and make sure all equipment is stored in its proper place.

  • Must be observant, safety conscious and able to react calmly and quickly in an emergency

  • Able to work flexible schedules

  • Always be professional, alert, courteous and ability to effectively resolve problems

  • Must demonstrate integrity and able to follow and uphold the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

  • Comfort and ability to live, sleep, and work in a rustic outdoor environment with irregular hours.


    Essential Functions

  • Maintains active surveillance of the pool area and canoe beach area.

  • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six” model. Completes related reports as required.

  • Maintains effective, positive relationships with the campers, participants and other staff.

  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.

  • Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.

  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.

  • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.

  • Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.

  • Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
