Divisional Senior Accountant
The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a Divisional Senior Accountant for the Finance Department located in Lutz, Florida.
Job Summary
Provides day-to-day supervision of personnel, reviews and approves accounting records; assists in the planning, organizing, controls and supervision of the accounting functions of The Salvation Army Florida Division Finance Department; reports operational results and provides management with decision making reporting.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of GAAP, methods, and practices of modern accounting, finance, budgeting and business administration. Knowledge of audit statement preparation for non-profit organizations. Knowledge of State Unclaimed Property Regulations. Knowledge of the principles and practices of payroll administration. Knowledge of IRS 1099 regulations, processes and deadlines. Skill in daily application of practical accounting and bookkeeping. Skill in maintaining databases ensuring accuracy and completeness of data
Skill to apply analytical and problem-solving methods and to interpret and understand financial documents. Ability to evaluate the organizations accounting and financial functions, respond to deficiencies by identifying and implementing appropriate corrective actions, develop and administer sound policies, procedures and budgets, and oversee the work of others. Ability to provide effective leadership to subordinates, maintain a variety of internal and external contacts and work cooperatively with superior and subordinate staff. Ability to plan work schedules, evaluate work performances, and resolve operational and personnel problems. Ability to conduct the affairs of this office responsibly, efficiently, and economically, and to motivate the staff to do likewise. Ability to counsel Salvation Army personnel in their discharge of duties relating to business, finance, and accounting. Ability to build and maintain effective and professional relationships with Salvation Army officers and employees, professionals in the community such as bankers, government agency representatives, and the payroll administration vendor. Ability to conduct thorough internal audits and to prepare and maintains accurate and complete reports in a timely manner. Ability to prepare accurate financial statements and to reconcile accounts. Ability to recognize the mishandling and/or misappropriation of funds. Ability to integrate and interpret data from various sources, and to plan, develop, and implement responsible strategies. Ability to prepare and scrutinize financial reports and documents ensuring integrity, accuracy, and completeness of the same. Ability to make sound, logical interpretations of established guidelines and regulations quickly. Ability to apply discretion and independent judgment with limited supervision. Ability to apply attention to detail and to perform assigned work at a level of proficiency, maintaining high standards of productivity and accuracy. Ability to use judgment and initiative in planning, organizing, directing and performing the work of assigned areas of responsibility. Ability to maintain confidentiality of financial records. Ability to process financial documents in compliance with established policies and procedures. Ability to prepare and maintain reports in an accurate, complete, and timely manner. Ability to perform routine and complex mathematical computations in an accurate manner. Ability to present a positive and professional image of The Salvation Army. Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, MBA not required but preferred and Five years progressively responsible experience administering accounting and financial functions for an organization with at least one year experience in a supervisory capacity, or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. and
Working knowledge of Great Plains accounting system (preferred)
Licenses and Certifications
Valid Driver License
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to type and perform data entry. Ability to perform mathematical calculations. Ability to operate various general office equipment including a telephone, typewriter, computer, fax machine and adding machine. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail with constant breaks in concentration associated with answering phones, or speaking to persons requiring assistance. Ability to read, write, and communicate in the English language. Ability to plan work priorities, evaluate work performances and provide recommendations for improving productivity and efficiency of work. Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing in an effective and professional manner including the providing of clear instructions to employees. Ability to work under the pressure of deadlines and time constraints. Ability to apply discretion and independent judgment and exercise confidentiality. Ability to conduct all duties in accordance with the ministry of the organization and its Christian principles; conducts all communications and job duties with the highest level of professionalism. Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking. Ability to travel when needed to accomplish assigned job duties. Moderate amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying moderately heavy objects (up to 40 lbs.) when handling file boxes.
Work may be performed in an office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like but not limited to the office environment with the exception of travel conditions.
