Job Summary


The Early Learning Program is focusing on children’s literacy skills for all children entering kindergarten. The literacy volunteer will work with the Volunteer Coordinator and preschool classroom Teachers to implement developmentally appropriate tutoring to the identified kindergarten bound students. The literacy tutor will work with individual and small groups of children on literacy skills needed for kindergarten success.




Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities


  • Provide on-site tutoring for identified students.

  • Work effectively and cooperatively with volunteer coordinator and site staff.

  • Implements developmentally appropriate programs and activity plans for identified children.

  • Ensures a high level of tutor-child interaction; initiates and nurtures personalized individual instruction with each child assigned to them.

  • Provide timely documentation of volunteer hours and in-kind hours to the volunteer coordinator.

  • Provide documentation of activities and outcomes/results to volunteer coordinator and classroom teachers.



Job Qualifications


  • Retired elementary school teacher, librarian or literacy coach with experience working with young children. preferred

  • College student studying Elementary Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Reading and Literacy or Early Childhood Education.

  • Prior experience working in a non-profit setting with young children. preferred

  • Travel to sites in the greater Cleveland area, as assigned.

  • Results of background check, based on fingerprints, must be free of any record of child abuse or moral turpitude.

  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed.

  • Must possess or be willing to obtain a profile on The Ohio Child Care Resource & Referral Association (OCCRRA).

  • Must provide medical statement of MMR and Tdap vaccines.

  • Must be able to pass TB, drug screen and physical exam.

  • Effectively communicate with children and staff, both verbally and in writing.

  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills.

  • Be self-directed, willing to take initiative, and detail-oriented.

  • Ability to work with 4 & 5 year-old children on building oral language, phonological awareness, and concepts of print.

  • Ability to prepare children in acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to be kindergarten ready, lifelong readers and learners.

  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the cultural diversity of the population served.

  • Respect and maintain confidentiality of The Centers staff, volunteers, partners, and donors.

  • Computer skills are desired, but not necessary.


Time Commitment and Stipend


  • Weekly visits (Monday-Friday) for a minimum of 2 hours per week.

  • One-Year Commitment.

  • Weekly $50 stipend provided for each weekly 2-hour minimum session(s) completed.


Physical Demands/Work Environment


This job operates in the classroom environment of an early learning center. While performing the duties of this job, the volunteer is regularly required to speak, hear, and interact with young children at their physical level. The volunteer is frequently required to sit, stand and walk for up to 2 hours, use hands and fingers, and reach with hands and arms. It requires the ability to lift supplies, equipment, and files and open/close storage cabinets. Must meet mental and physical ability requirements for employees and childcare staff members set forth by the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services rule 5101.
