The Centers for Families and Children seeks a part-time (15 hrs/wk), non-paid Development Research Intern to support the Director, Donor & Prospect Research in providing strategic information resources to the Government Relations and Development Department. In this position, the Development Research Intern will have the opportunity to experience the work of prospect research, nonprofit development, and government relations strategies by supporting a department that raises over $3.5 million annually. S/he will carry out research on projects directed by the Director of Donor & Prospect Research, including government officials, legislation, individual donors, corporations and foundations. This is a unique opportunity for a student researcher to have a significant impact on The Centers’ fundraising and advocacy activities.
• Organize, research and track public policy, rules, regulations and relevant legislation.
• Provide philanthropic research for assigned projects, including corporate and foundation backgrounds, giving trends, and individual donor information.
• Assist in the ongoing development of relationships with key legislators and their staffs/committee staffs and regulators to effectively channel the goals and desires of The Centers.
• Use subscription databases and other search tools to find information relevant to impact areas, individuals, government, corporations or foundations.
• Map government and philanthropic relationships to help identify opportunities for The Centers to maximize fundraising potential.
• Analyze results of wealth and philanthropy screenings of donor database.
• Perform library research and data collection as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Experience in or curiosity about nonprofit organizations and philanthropy.
• Experience sourcing information from databases and online, including (but not limited to) Lexis/Nexis, ProQuest, JSTOR, Guidestar, Foundation Center, etc.
• Strong analytical skills, including the ability to identify patterns in data and explain what those patterns mean to others.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Must be comfortable with learning new software, if necessary.
• Ability to maintain confidential information.
• Excellent oral/written communication skills.
• Attention to detail and accuracy are essential.
• Must be highly organized, able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
• Proactive, flexible and team player.
• Frequent contact with the development staff.
• Collaborative relationship with data-base professionals in the Information Technology Department.
