Position Summary:

Under the lead direction of the Grandview Early Learning Center (GELC) Director or designee, provide support for the health and safety of the children on the Subsidized Childcare Assistance Program. Work effectively with qualifying families in providing educational stimulation, child development knowledge, and referrals and resources for social service providers and educational services.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Using the State health and safety standards for center-based child care and Tribal health and safety standards for non-licensed child care, educate parents and providers to their responsibilities, opportunities, and rights. 

  2. Must attend all required trainings at GELC and keep all certificates current: CPR, Food Handlers.

  3. Provides services in family homes. The visits are on a weekly basis and are focused on the health and safety of the child in a childcare setting.  Personal visits last 45 to 60 minutes.  The parent-educator must plan the visit, gather materials, travel, conduct the visit, and document the visit.  

  4. Identify family strengths, health care needs and socials service needs.  In partnership with the family and other social service providers, develop an individual family plan.  Encourage and support the family in working toward goals they have set.  Provide appropriate referrals for on-going and emergent needs and monitor their progress. 

  5. Develop a comfortable and trusting relationship with each family so that the needs of each individual child are met.  Be able to establish a rapport with families and empower parents by building upon their strengths.

  6. Assist families in arranging transportation to center activities.  If necessary, transport parents using GSA approved vehicles to center activities such as Parent Nights. 

  7. Engage in follow-up visits with providers and/or with referral agencies to insure progress toward established goals.                                          

  8. Maintain accurate complete records. Draft, finalize, and submit monthly reports to GELC director. 

  9. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education and/or Experience



  1. Possess a high school diploma or GED.

  2. Two years of experience working in early childhood education and/or family development programs.

  3. Must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License.

  4. Obtain a First Aid and CPR card within 30 days of employment. 

  5. Obtain a Food Handler’s card within 30 days of employment



  1. Experience working with low income families with young children, preferably within the Native American community.

  2. Knowledgeable about community resources within the surrounding Pierce County community in order to link families to appropriate resources.

  3. Experience and/or training in a specialty focused in the areas of education, speech, language, behavior or a closely related educational field

  4. Strong knowledge of Native American culture


Must be able to pass state background check clearance to work in a child care setting prior to employment and periodically during employment.


Intermediate computer skills to assist in the development of family files is required.




Knowledge of child development and effective parenting techniques related to present researched best practices.

Working in a school, especially a tribal school or ECE education setting.

Detailed minded with the capability to prioritize multiple tasks at the same time


Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.


Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.


Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


Licenses or Certificates

Ÿ TB Test, First Aid/CPR certification required.

Ÿ Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted Washington State driver’s license. Driver’s license must not contain any restrictions that would prevent the employee from driving a GSA vehicle.

  • Must attend and complete all GELC mandatory trainings.

  • Must complete and pass a drug and alcohol screening upon hire and throughout employment.

      Conditions dealing with distraught parents and children.

  • Must be willing to become familiar with the Native community and community support agencies.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, including Native students and families while demonstrating positive role model characteristics.

  • Demonstrate and practice a thorough understanding of confidentiality.

  • Must be flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of the students and families in the program.

  • Ability to utilize technology and familiarity with organizational software to effectively create necessary documents essential to program.

  • Ability to work independently and to exercise sound judgment.
