Position Summary:

 

Under the supervision of the Grandview Early Learning Center Director, the Language Teacher will teach the Southern Lushootseed language to all the Grandview classes. The Language Teacher will track progress to meet the individual needs of language students.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  1. Implements an instructional program designed to meet individual student needs and whole groups that include the Southern Lushootseed language, cultural curricula and lesson plans.

  2. Confers with students and other staff to provide guidance that encourages language learning achievement.

  3. Establishes classroom goals and objectives in conformance with the Southern Lushootseed Language and informally evaluates student progress.

  4. Collects and interprets a variety of data; provides quarterly reports for administrative purposes.

  5. Coordinates with parents and staff events/gathers (i.e. drum making, weaving, resource gathering, song & dance performance and practices, etc...) for Grandview Early Learning Center.

  6. Attends or participates in required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary.

  7. Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

  8. Enroll in the Puyallup Language Program to get certification and continue to bring knowledge to Grandview Early Learning Center.

  9. Other duties as assigned.

     

    Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
 

Qualifications and Requirements

Must be enrolled in a Western Washington Tribe or a 1st or 2nd generational descendant of an enrolled member of a Western Washington Tribe.


Education and/or Experience

Required for both Non-Credentialed and Credentialed Teachers:

s  High School Diploma or GED; and

s  Minimum of two years of exposure, study and understanding of the Southern Lushootseed language and culture; and

s  Demonstrated knowledge of the Southern Lushootseed language and Coast Salish culture; and

s  Must demonstrate an ability to research Southern Lushootseed language and seek out cultural information; and

s  Must demonstrate ability to design and implement lesson plans for students having a wide range of ages, abilities and achievements; and

s  Must organize educational activities and effectively communicate with students ranging from infants to elders keeping in mind maturity and attention span levels of students; and

s  Must have Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Language Teacher Skills:

s  Must have successfully completed the Puyallup Language Teacher Training Program and have received a teaching certification from the Program or must have successfully completed a substantial number of Units in the Puyallup Language Teacher Training Program;

s  Experience in teaching the Southern Lushootseed Language to others; and

s  Must have knowledge of effective student behavior management techniques and ability to deal with students in a positive and confident manner.

 

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards.


Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.


Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


Other Skills/Requirements

Must have and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and proof of auto insurance.

Must have and maintain a First Aid/CPR certification.

Must have ability to speak and understand and read the Southern Lushootseed language.
