The mission of the Project HOME community is to empower adults, children, and families to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty, to alleviate the underlying causes of poverty, and to enable all of us to attain our fullest potential as individuals and as members of the broader society. Project HOME achieves its mission through a continuum of services comprised of street outreach, a range of supportive housing, and comprehensive services. We address the root causes of homelessness through neighborhood-based affordable housing, economic development, and environmental enhancement programs, as well as through providing access to employment opportunities; adult and youth education; and health care.
Project HOME is committed to social and political advocacy. An integral part of our work is education about the realities of homelessness and poverty and vigorous advocacy on behalf of and with homeless and low-income persons for more just and humane public policies.

Job Summary: The chief responsibility of the Support Staff is to provide for the safety of the residents and security of the building. Duties include handling emergencies, monitoring medications, making hourly rounds and recording events in the log, performing housekeeping duties as needed, assisting residents with activities for daily living, keeping informed of resident’s weekly progress, logging residents in/out of building, assisting in preparing and/or serving meals, and other administrative tasks as assigned.
St. Columba’s is a safe haven for 40 men who have a history of chronic homelessness and serious mental illness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- General Duties:
- Safety and Security
- Conduct hourly rounds of each floor, including checking on the safety and security of residents, and that the building doors/windows are secure and monitors are working properly. Record any maintenance problems; complete maintenance request forms
- Document hourly rounds in the log book, reporting any activity of note or critical incidents.
- Monitor front door access, and general safety of residents in the courtyard and front porch.
- Enforce program policies, e.g., curfew, lights out
- Intervene during residents crisis situations. Become familiar with emergency/crisis procedures. Contact emergency services and on-call staff in case of resident emergency or property emergency (flood, fire).
- Familiarize self with the list of emergency/crisis procedures posted and listed in the Procedures Manual.
- Alert the supervisor and/or on-call of any emergencies, per Procedures Manual.
- Medication Monitoring and Medication Room Management
- Assist residents to comply with taking their prescribed medications per medication monitoring policy and protocols. (Can be jointly conducted with shift partner as appropriate).
- Prepare medication room station (filling water container before morning medication monitoring, refilling supply of cups, gloves, forms, pens; wiping down table.)
- Review medication supply for each resident (including overflow bin), and create list of medications to be called into the pharmacy for any needing to be refilled.
- Organize medication logs in weekly binders. Xerox and maintain supply of medication signature logs for use with medication monitoring.
- Other duties as assigned/appropriate.
- Documentation and Record Keeping:
- Make entries in residents' records as needed.
- Complete all necessary forms, reports, medical records, resident log, etc. during shift.
- Record emergency situations in Daily Log.
- Answer the telephones and take accurate and detailed messages.
- Kitchen Responsibilities:
- Assist in preparing and serving meals.
- Oversee/assist kitchen clean-up
- Obtain and maintain Serve Safe Certification
- Support To Residents:
- Meet with residents in a group and individually as needed.
- Receive verbal report from staff at shift change, and review staff and resident logs.
- Communicate with case managers about issues, concerns or problems that occurred during shift.
- Assist residents with personal hygiene issues as needed.
- Performing general housekeeping chores.
- Monitor and assist residents in personal laundry as according to house schedule
- Assist with activities and celebrations
- Trainings and Meeting:
- Attend staff meetings as scheduled.
- Attend trainings as assigned.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES (Support Staff working Monday-Friday business hours):
Foster a Hospitable Environment: Includes welcoming case managers and other off-site visitors, coordinating visits/appointments with residents, engaging with residents around keeping these appointments, conducting site tours, introducing visitors/residents to the program, efficiently directing phone calls to proper clinical staff, and answering questions from callers about the St. Columba’s programming.
Manage Day-to-Day Administrative Tasks: Includes efficiently and independently updating MARs and rounds sheets, creating flyers or other needed forms, managing the inventory of St. Columba’s on-site donation room, coordinating maintenance/cleaning requests, and providing assistance as appropriate in maintaining medication room standards (coordinating medication needs to clinical staff, disposing expired of medication, etc.).
Encourage Resident Participation: Includes engaging residents to attend on-site OT groups, weekly community meetings, and other residential activities, and taking attendance and minutes as necessary.
- A high school diploma (or equivalent), higher education preferred
- Excellent documentation and organization skills
- Data entry experience
- Able to engage persons in conversations and develop rapport
- Must be dedicated to assisting others while fostering their self-esteem and dignity
- Ability to work well in a team context
- Ability to appropriately manage crisis situations
- Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with persons with substance abuse, mental health issues and/or homelessness.
