Job Summary:  The primary responsibilities of the General Accountant – Managed Entities & Internal Auditor is to (1) ensure the accuracy of the general ledger, perform assigned monthly close procedures, and provide analytical support to the Controller, Accounting Manager and VP of Property Management for all of Project HOME’s managed entities and (2) perform internal audit functions for all of Project HOME’s financial policies & procedures, including ensuring the accuracy of process documentation and testing transactions to ensure compliance with key internal controls.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monthly Closings:
    • Perform assigned monthly close procedures within the stipulated deadline
    • Prepare and enter journal entries into the accounting software, including maintaining the electronic support
    • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations and monitor stale dated checks
    • Maintain schedules that support the general ledger accounts, including a monthly revenue review
    • Assist in gathering support for certain intercompany reconciliations between the Managed Entities and Project HOME
    • Monitor and respond to general ledger activity questions, including making corrections as needed
    • Populate the monthly budget to actual reports and quarterly operating reports
  • Other Financial Duties:
    • Enter rent subsidy cash receipts
    • Enter non-tenant cash receipts on a weekly basis
    • Maintain the tenant security deposit escrow bank accounts
    • Maintain fixed asset listings and related depreciation calculations
    • Maintain capital projects vs. budget analyses
    • Prepare replacement reserve reimbursement requests for capital improvements
    • Prepare the annual Project HOME consolidated financial statement and provide variance analysis of results
    • Provide financial analysis support to the Controller and Accounting Manager, as requested
  • Audit & Tax:
    • Provide auditors with requested documents for testing during field work
    • Assist auditors with questions during field work
    • Agree the draft audited financial statements and tax returns to the trial balance
    • Ensure all audit adjustment journal entries are recorded timely
  • Property Management Accounting Analysis:
    • Prepare analysis for utilities and repairs & maintenance costs on a monthly basis.  Research variances as needed.
  • Internal Audit:
    • Assist in drafting or changing policies and procedures ensuring all documentation accurately reflects the transaction process and related internal controls
    • Conduct on-site walkthroughs and testing of our financial policies and procedures, interviewing staff and reviewing transactions to ensure accuracy and compliance and to identify unusual transactions that require further investigation
    • Conduct weekly & monthly transaction audit testing of key Accounting processes, including accounts payable, cash receipts, and credit cards
    • Assist with the preparation of reports that summarize findings, identify areas of strength and deficiencies, and make recommendations for corrective actions, as necessary, to support the organization’s goals and objectives
    • Conduct follow-up testing to determine if management’s corrective action plans were implemented timely and communicate the results to senior executive management.
  • Administration and Supervision:
    • Communicate possible missed deadlines to the Accounting Manager in a timely manner
    • Evaluate the processes within the department for efficiency and effectiveness and make recommendations to the Accounting Manager for possible improvements
    • Additional duties as assigned by the Accounting Manager or Controller

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
  • Basic understanding of audit theory and application
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, vlook-ups and sum-if formulas
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent listening, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task, work efficiently, and meet stipulated deadlines
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a strong team environment
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license; travel between Project HOME site required

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 year of experience in an Accounting related field
  • Experience with Accounting software
  • Internship within Auditing field is a plus
