Job summary:

A full-time position for a research technician is immediately available in Division of Inflammation Biology at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology.  The successful candidate will join a team of scientists investigating inflammation as a defense reaction caused by tissue damage or injury, specifically in atherosclerosis. The research involves molecular biology, bioinformatics, flow cytometry, cell sorting, high-throughput next generation sequencing technologies (RNA-Seq, BD Rhapsody, 10X Genomics).

 

Most of the work will be done on human blood cells (BSL2). Pertinent training will be provided. This position requires a 2 to 3-year commitment.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The candidate will support active research and day-to-day operations of the laboratory under the supervision of the Lab Manager. We seek a candidate will routinely process a large number of samples following protocols involving more than 100 steps; therefore, a candidate who is diligent, meticulous, displays initiative, and has an exceptional level of organization, record-keeping and time management is required for this position. Specific responsibilities include but not limited to:

 

  • Flow Cytometry
  • Cell sorting
  • Nucleic acid extraction
  • Sample preparation for RNA-Seq and other high throughput technologies
  • Quality Control analysis of samples through appropriate equipment
  • Routine Laboratory duties
  • Keeping abreast of current technologies and suggesting innovative ways to combine them in a biologically meaningful setting
  • Attend Lab Meetings

Qualifications:

 

Minimum requirements:

A bachelor degree (BS/BA) in biology, biochemistry or a related field. Meaningful experience with databases. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

 

Preferred requirements:

Two years of lab experience in an academic or industrial setting. Desire to perform the duties of both molecular biology and bioinformatics.
