ISO New England oversees the 24/7 operation of the power grid that covers the six-states of  New England and administers the region’s $10+ billion “stock exchange” for the buying and selling of wholesale electricity. The power system is constantly evolving as new technologies emerge and energy policies evolve. There is a lot going on at our organization behind the scenes to make sure the grid continuously yields reliable electricity at competitive prices while addressing the unique challenges that come along with our industry.

Department description:
 
Business Architecture & Technology department carries out the major research and development initiatives for ISO-NE.

What will you be working on:
 
The various market development/improvement needs calls for a market simulation tool that captures the major ISO market features and takes the ISO format data input, while being flexible enough to allow quick modification of the clearing model. The intern is expected to develop this tool during the internship. 

How will you make an impact:
  • Develop data adapters for ISO market data input;
  • Produce day-ahead market clearing models in Python;
  • Test and validate the market clearing models with ISO data.

What we look for in a candidate:
  • Good understanding of ISO markets and clearing process.
  • Knowledge of power system operations.
  • Proficient computer programming skills, especially Python.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Good understanding of how ISO markets clear (this usually requires an optimization related background).
  • Ability to write Python code for the simulator, so experience in programming (especially Python) is preferred.
To be eligible for the internship candidate must have completed at least the first year of college and be currently enrolled in a four year or graduate-level academic program. Candidates must have the authority to work in the US on a permanent basis, without requiring sponsorship.
