ISO New England oversees the 24/7 operation of the power grid that covers the six-states of  New England and administers the region’s $10+ billion “stock exchange” for the buying and selling of wholesale electricity. The power system is constantly evolving as new technologies emerge and energy policies evolve. There is a lot going on at our organization behind the scenes to make sure the grid continuously yields reliable electricity at competitive prices while addressing the unique challenges that come along with our industry.

Department description:
 

Business Architecture and Technology provides business and technical solutions to various business units at ISO New England. The department also conducts research and development in market design and operations, power system planning and operations.

What will you be working on:

 
The intern will help implement the probabilistic model for N-k contingency analysis support integration with the Potential Cascade Mode (PCM) online application.

How will you make an impact:
  • Understand the probability models for power system contingency analysis.
  • Implement software prototypes in Matlab or Python to compute probabilities for N-k contingency scenarios.
  • Integrate the protocol with the PCM tool.
What we look for in a candidate:
  • Strong power system background and mathematic knowledge.
  • Software skills in Matlab and/or Python.
  • Strong motivation for innovation and good work ethics.
  • Practical knowledge of the PowerWorld software. 
  • Knowledge of the probability theory.
To be eligible for the internship candidate must have completed at least the first year of college and be currently enrolled in a four year or graduate-level academic program. Candidates must have the authority to work in the US on a permanent basis, without requiring sponsorship.
