Engineer IV – FPGA/Digital Design / Implementation

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Mixed Signal Solutions department at HRL Laboratories is a highly talented team of scientists and engineers with diverse backgrounds in integrated circuit design, advanced packaging and integration, novel signal processing and algorithm development, and integration / characterization of highly complex digital and mixed signal systems and subsystems for commercial and government applications in an innovative research and development environment. Work as part of a project team in this environment, performing in-depth development, simulation, verification, and debugging of FPGA code with Verilog or System Verilog. Implement algorithms, signal processing functions, data processing, and custom digital interfaces (e.g. for ADC/DAC). Program firmware code for microcontrollers with C or C++, and simulation and verification code with Matlab. Work directly and hands-on with custom FPGA boards and electronics. Contribute to design of associated custom hardware platforms Technical duties require candidate to present details of work to colleagues during design reviews, create and manage work plans to meet or exceed schedule deadlines, and provide written and oral summaries of work performed as needed (e.g. for reports).
EXPERIENCE DESIRED: At least 5 years of experience with Xilinx or Altera devices, FPGA architectures, and development tools such as Quartus, Vivado, SDK, and Modelsim HDL simulators. Familiar with embedded microcontrollers such as Microblaze/Zynq. Good understanding of SerDes operation/programming and high speed signal integrity in general for speeds up 10Gbps and higher. Proficient with interfaces such as SPI, UART, I2C, USB, and GTX transceivers. Experienced with troubleshooting of PCBs and related electronics such as ADCs, DACs and high speed interfaces using Oscilloscopes, Spectrum Analyzers, Logic Analyzers, and related lab equipment.
KNOWLEDGE DESIRED: Familiar with various FPGA platforms (primarily Xilinx and Altera) And their associated features, tradeoffs, and limitations. Basic understanding of digital signal processing and communication theory. Good understanding of programming languages such as Verilog, System Verilog, C, C++, Python, and Matlab. Familiarity with theory and operation of wide variety of test equipment. Knowledge of fundamental electrical engineering and circuit design principles. Use of Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and proficiency in writing for reporting. Experience with digital design for custom ASIC development is a plus.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Proficiency in use of computers, engineering work stations, complex electronic equipment, oral and written communication, interaction with vendors/colleagues and willingness to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Ability to work well in a team and independently. Must be sufficiently mobile to work within confined spaces and have both visual and hearing acuity.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (e.g. driver’s license special tools or restrictions): U.S. citizenship is required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Active SSBI is a plus.
