Engineer IV - Photonic Device Microfabrication

EDUCATION DESIRED: Ph.D. in materials science or electrical engineering, with a strong emphasis on photonics and semiconductor processing.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Conduct research to define and drive the development of materials and fabrication process flows for photonic integrated circuits/components from conception to production to meet system level performance goals. The candidate will solve complex problems in the area of photonic integrated circuits across multiple material systems combing existing processes with the creation of novel fabrication processes/flows leading to new photonic integrated circuit technologies.


EXPERIENCE DESIRED: The ideal candidate for this position will have 2-5 years hands on experience in the semiconductor or photonic industry. Expertise in device design, materials development and novel fabrication methods related to building low loss chip scale photonic components/circuits such as waveguides, gratings, couplers, photodetectors and resonators is required. Experience in complex and hybrid process integration with multiple semiconductor devices/materials including epitaxial transfer, direct material bonding and device bonding is desired. Knowledge of MQW and/or VCSEL laser fabrication techniques and processes is required. Experience with optical packaging including edge and fiber coupling plus advanced micro-system integration and chip scale packaging techniques is required. The ideal candidate should have experience with physical, electrical and optical characterization of materials and devices. Hands on experience with mask layout tools such as Cadence and L-EDIT is a plus. Experience working with photonic foundries with skills including layout, design rule checking, and process design kit (PDK) use and understanding of material growth technologies for semiconductor materials such as silicon and group III/V semiconductors and for the dielectric films such as silicon nitride and silicon oxide is desired. Excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to work effectively in diverse teams are integral parts of the job. Participation in proposal writing, marketing, external presentations to customers and the generation of intellectual property are alsoexpected.  

KNOWLEDGE DESIRED: In-depth knowledge of photonic device physics and materials and fabrication techniques. Ability to relate basic material and physical characteristics to device performance is essential. Strong knowledge design of experiment techniques and of statistical methods for analyzing and correlating experimental processing data with measured electrical data. Knowledge of safe handling of chemicals and processing equipment in modern semiconductor processing. 

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to work safely in laboratory settings including semiconductor processing and materials growth areas, device testing, and clean room facilities. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
