Engineer II - Prototyping and Test

Malibu, CA, USA Req #25
Monday, July 15, 2019
We are a diverse team of scientists and engineers researching new applications of nonlinear dynamics, multiferroic, and multi-functional materials for vibration isolation, sensing, and communication currently seeking highly motivated candidates to join our group in the Materials & Microsystems Laboratory at HRL Laboratories. Candidates that have creative problem solving skills, hands-on prototyping experience, and the ability to work safely and effectively on a team and independently will be considered for this position. The ideal candidate will have 2 or more years of full time employment in engineering or significant laboratory research experience and a Masters degree.

EDUCATION DESIRED: BS mechanical or electrical engineering with an emphasis in mechatronics or electromechanical systems. MS in mechanical or electrical engineering is a plus.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: This position requires that the candidate be able to understand circuit schematics and mechanical drawings as well as be familiar with simple electronics circuit design and SPICE simulation, Printed Circuit Board (PCB) layout and testing, basic knowledge of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and mechatronics/electromechanical system assembly and validation. The candidate must be able solder electronic components, build wire harnesses, assemble mechanical parts and integrate the sub-systems into a presentable and safe functional prototype. Basic programming experience and understanding of flow chart diagrams will be a significant differentiator in the selection of a candidate.

Additional job tasks the candidate will be involved in as part of the team include new concept brainstorming, modeling and simulation (CAD, FEA, Matlab), selection and procurement, interfacing with the machine shops, and instrumentation and testing. Test activities include operating load frames and electrodynamic shakers and data acquisition verifying the performance of electromechanical devices including measurement of power, temperature, strain, acceleration, and modal response. With more experience, the candidate can grow into roles with more responsibility; including: interfacing with customers, writing patents, journal publications, and proposals, and managing research projects.

EXPERIENCE DESIRED: The candidate should have hands-on experience as a strongly contributing member of a development team designing and prototyping electromechanical devices. For recent graduates, experience on COOPS, internships, extracurricular engineering teams. Experience in a university research lab, national lab, or similar organization is also desirable.

KNOWLEDGE DESIRED: Basic experience in mechanical CAD such as Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks, electronic circuit and board design and simulation software such as Altium Designer (Preferred), EAGLE, or Mentor Graphics PADS is a must. Knowledge of Abaqus, COMSOL, Matlab, and any Computer Programming language are a plus.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be capable of working safely in a laboratory environment involving tools for mechanical and electronics assembly. Good critical thinking skills and sensible understanding of personal safety when working alone or with others is necessary.
