Engineer I - Materials Fabrication and Prototyping
EDUCATION DESIRED: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in materials science, manufacturing or engineering with 3+ years of experience in materials characterization, hands-on fabrication and/or pilot-scale manufacturing
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Assist in fabrication and prototyping of advanced materials including polymers, metals, composites and lightweight foams
Perform characterization testing of these materials and document results for technical team
Work independently, follow detailed work instructions, and suggest process improvements to streamline existing processes.
Develop standard operating procedures for scale-up and transition of manufacturing processes.
Lead maintenance and sustainment of advanced processing hardware including furnaces, ovens, film laminators and additive manufacturing systems
Duties may also include maintenance of stocks and supplies, monitoring of lab instrument calibration status, and ensuring overall laboratory upkeep.
Position will require frequent technical communication with team members, including oral and written reporting.
Experience with good lab practices (documentation, safety procedures) is essential.
Familiarity with processing and handling of polymer and metal foams, photopolymer and thermoset resins, and/or powdered metals is highly desirable.
Prior experience in development and documentation of pilot-scale manufacturing processes and transition of these processes to a large-scale manufacturing operation is highly desirable
Knowledge of machine tool operation or familiarity with additive manufacturing hardware (e.g. selective laser melting, vat photopolymerization) is a plus.
Hands-on experience in a lab or production setting with the fabrication of materials and structures is ideal.Previous experience with adhesive bonding or mechanical assembly are preferred.
Familiarity with process specification development, quality documents (e.g. ISO 9001) and testing standards (e.g. ASTM, IEEE) is desirable.
Knowledge of standard protocols for multi-step processing of materials is required.
Familiarity with scale-up of laboratory or pilot scale manufacturing processes is required
Knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry and materials science is required.
Knowledge of the basic principles of additive manufacturing is a plus.
Familiarity with quality specifications and product tracking (e.g. ISO 9001) is highly desirable
Attention to detail and the ability to follow detailed written instructions are essential.
Excellent communication skills (written and oral) are required.
Essential Physical/Mental Requirements:
Applicant must be capable of working safely in a laboratory
Applicant must be capable of performing extended tasks at a laboratory bench, fume hood, glove box or computer workstation.
Must be able to learn and safely operate materials fabrication and analysis equipment.
Requires good laboratory practice, ability to document and communicate results, strong hands-on fabrication skills and safe handling of chemicals.
