GROUP LEADER – Mixed Signal Hardware Engineering and Advanced Integration
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Mixed Signal Solutions department at HRL Laboratories is a highly talented team of scientists and engineers with diverse backgrounds in integrated circuit design, advanced packaging and integration, novel signal processing and algorithm development, and integration / characterization of highly complex digital and mixed signal systems and subsystems for commercial and government applications in an innovative research and development environment. We seek a self-motivated scientist / engineer with strong communication and leadership skills to serve as the Group Leader (first line manager) for the Hardware Engineering and Advanced Integration team within this department. The role consists of roughly 25% management and 75% technical contributions. Line management duties include managing resources (e.g. allocating team personnel to projects), talent acquisition (e.g. recruiting), performance management through informal and formal feedback, and additional department-wide, lab-wide, and HRL-wide assignments (e.g. strategic planning for capital investments). Through this leadership role, the Group Leader also has the opportunity to help direct and influence strategic planning and technical direction within the department and across the broader reach of HRL departments, laboratories, and projects. Technical contributions (through direct technical work and/or technical project leadership) should be aligned with the skills and capabilities of the team in one or more of the following areas: advanced electronic packaging (e.g. 3D, 2.5D integration, single-chip and multi-chip fine pitch ceramic / organic packaging), complex printed circuit board design and associated electromagnetic analysis, signal integrity (SI) analysis, power integrity (PI) analysis, development of custom processing platforms with commercial components such as FPGAs and associated memory. Technical and managerial duties require candidate to present details of work to colleagues during design reviews, create and manage work plans to meet or exceed schedule deadlines, and provide written and oral summaries of work performed as needed (e.g. for reports).
EXPERIENCE DESIRED: At least 2 years of experience in a role involving leadership of highly trained technical staff. Demonstrated experience with successful resource allocation and management. Experience with line management functions, such as drafting of job descriptions, hiring staff, and providing critical feedback to staff. More than 7 years of experience in one or more of the technical areas outlined above, preferably in a research and development environment.
KNOWLEDGE DESIRED: Familiarity with a wide range of digital and mixed signal systems across a wide range of applications (e.g. software-defined radio, RADAR, communications systems, EW, AESAs, ROICs, etc.). Familiarity with all of the technical disciplines comprising the Hardware Engineering and Advanced Packaging group (outlined above), with expert knowledge in at least one of these areas.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Proficiency in use of computers, engineering work stations, complex electronic equipment, oral and written communication, interaction with vendors/colleagues and willingness to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Ability to work well in a team and independently. Must be sufficiently mobile to work within confined spaces and have both visual and hearing acuity.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (e.g. driver’s license, special tools or restrictions): U.S. citizenship is required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Active SSBI is a plus.
