The Journal & Courier in Lafayette, Indiana, part of the USA TODAY Network, seeks a talented, experienced government watchdog reporter to strengthen its depth and breadth of reporting on Lafayette, West Lafayette and Tippecanoe County government. The position is strictly a news writing position. The reporter will be expected to produce, on average, 4-6 stories per week. The reporter should be capable and willing to tell stories in non-traditional ways, sometimes in quicker, easier-to-consume formats aimed at a digital audience.
The majority of the coverage for this beat should be revelatory and solutions oriented, aimed at making Tippecanoe County a better place to live. While attending necessary meetings is certainly a part of this reporter’s job, the majority of the story telling should be original, investigative, enterprise and solutions-based reporting about issues and topics most important to our readers, not meeting coverage.
Professional reporting experience, as well as a strong grasp of open record laws and research skills are required.
When applying, please include a single document with as much of the following as possible:
a brief cover letter explaining your interest and fit for the position, your updated resume, and portfolio/clips/links to a few samples of your work. It’s important that these items be assembled into a single document, preferably in PDF format. The application will only allow one document upload. Completing these steps will ensure that you receive the highest consideration.
