Indianapolis is a city of nearly 900,000. It is the economic, government and cultural center of Indiana. It is home to an award-winning Children's Museum, one of the most highly regarded airports in the US, a burgeoning chef-driven dining scene, two major professional sports franchises and the Indianapolis 500.
It also is a city that has suffered through four straight years of increased homicides and struggles providing basic infrastructure in its neighborhoods.
In short, Indianapolis is a city that provides a good quality of life for many but also the types of challenges that is an opportunity for a journalist looking to make a difference.
The IndyStar is looking for the right reporter to make that difference. We are seeking a reporter with the savvy to pore over a city budget and the sense of justice to question the fairness of city spending to be our new Indianapolis reporter. Yes, this is a city hall reporting position, but our intent is to focus less on council meetings and more on how the actions -- and inactions -- of those in power affect the quality of life for those in the community. It is also our intent for stories to originate not just from news conferences or meeting agendas, but by speaking with neighborhood associations, business owners and others whose concerns might not otherwise be covered.
