The Evansville Courier & Press, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, seeks an enterprising reporter to cover breaking news/public safety in the Tri-State with a focus on Evansville. This reporter needs to be highly motivated and part of a fast-paced team focused on telling compelling stories that resonate with audiences. The breaking news reporter will work the traditional cops beat with minimal courts coverage but also have a role in watchdog reporting providing journalism with an impact that readers will want to share and talk about.
Bachelor’s in journalism or equivalent
Daily news experience
Ability to write clear, compelling articles and enhance work with video and other digital storytelling tools
Flexible, energetic, curious and self-starting
Sense of urgency and the ability to quickly distill breaking news and then returning with a deeper look
Reporting and delivering a steady stream of news stories of interest to our audience via writing, Twitter or other methods
Understanding of social media and how to engage audience on digital platforms
Ability to multi-task and excel under deadline pressure, using time efficiently in a 24-hour newsroom
Ability to adapt in a rapidly changing industry
Occasional weekend and night work as beat/stories demand
Be open to using metrics to inform story choices and shape beat strategies.
Use social media to reach readers where they spend their time and attention.
Provide cogent analysis of trends and issues that affect the daily lives of readers.
Use social media to reach out to new and existing readers and create an identity online that readers connect with.
