Sales Tax Accountant

 

Basic Function:

The sales tax accountant position is accountable for the collection of tax-related information, reporting to taxation authorities at state, county, and local levels in a timely manner, and advising management on the tax impact of various sales tax changes.

 

Principal Accountabilities:

• Reconciled to the GL for month-end and year-end close.

• Register new locations with state and local licensing requirements

• Prepared sales tax returns in 45 states within all cities and counties.

• Research taxability by jurisdiction

• Applied and renewed business licenses, sales tax licenses, and various other excise tax licenses

• Complete required tax reporting in a timely manner

• Update the company sales tax database as tax rates change

• Coordinate audits by various taxation authorities

• Research the basis for tax positions to be taken

• Advise management on the impact of new laws on tax liabilities

• Other duties as assigned

 

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience in tax research (CCH)

• Strong Excel, Word skills

• Solid grasp of general accounting concepts

• Multi-state background

• Demonstrated ability to work closely with operations and other departments in finance

• Excellent analytical skills

 

Education/Experience:

• A Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required and 1-3 years of sales tax/property tax experience required.

• Multi-State tax compliance preferred.

• Tax compliance experience in retail business a plus.
