Principal job that is accountable for the production, cost control, editing, and distribution of the ABA Journal magazine.
Principal Duties/Job Responsibilities
-Accountable for the editorial vision, production, and member acceptance of the ABA Journal and its content.
-Leads the transition of the ABA Journal from the traditional hard copy magazine to other electronic media while ensuring the quality and the readability of the materials presented.
-Understands and fulfills member informational needs through the production of the ABA Journal.
-Leads operations and editorial services to optimize reader understanding and appreciation while ensuring the lowest possible production costs.-
-Accountable for achieving all revenue generation targets and goals through advertising, sponsorship, and/or other non-dues revenue generation activities.
-Provides leadership, direction, coaching, counseling, and, where necessary, delivers discipline to and through assigned subordinates.
-Recommends appropriate strategies necessary to optimize the brand value of the ABA Journal and implement day-to-day tactics to achieve such strategies.
-Participates in the negotiations of paper, print, production, distribution, outsourcing, advertising sales and other contracts to maximize margins.
-Maintains a current sense of the legal issues and trends facing the legal professions and directs the production of appropriate story content to satisfy such informational needs.
-Collaborates with other ABA operational groups to ensure optimal content delivery that support the entire ABA Brand.
-Responsible for achieving budgeted revenue and costs metrics and business objectives.
-Interfaces with and manages the expectations of an editorial board.
-Makes decisions about positioning the publication platform to appeal to a wider base of readers and advertisers.
-Provides timely, accurate and complete reports on the operating and financial condition of the ABA Journal.
-Accountable for the development, communication and implementation efforts of effective strategies and processes for revenue growth and new product development.
-Collaborates with and monitors established ABA advertising contractors and sets strategic direction for advertising on ABA Journal media platforms.
-Oversees the production of a media kit that can be used as a tool to attract potential advertisers.
-Participate in selections of additional advertising contractors and reviews current contractors’ performance.
Basic Qualifications & Interests
-Possession of a bachelors’ degree from an accredited college or university.
-Experience managing journalists and running a newsroom or news operation.
-At least five years’ experience interpreting legal developments and trends and converting such interpretations into meaningful and useful content.
-Previous experience providing editorial services to a professional journal in both print and electronic media.
Preferred Qualifications & Interests
-Masters in Journalism and Mass Communications
-Experience in legal affairs journalism
